CVE-2018-8007: Apache CouchDB administrative users can configure the database server via HTTP(S).

Apache CouchDB administrative users can configure the database server via HTTP(S). Due to insufficient validation of administrator-supplied configuration settings via the HTTP API, it is possible for a CouchDB administrator user to escalate their privileges to that of the operating system's user that CouchDB runs under, by bypassing the blacklist of configuration settings that are not allowed to be modified via the HTTP API. This privilege escalation effectively allows an existing CouchDB admin user to gain arbitrary remote code execution, bypassing already disclosed CVE-2017-12636. Mitigation: All users should upgrade to CouchDB releases 1.7.2 or 2.1.2.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This flaw lets someone who is already a CouchDB administrator turn database-level control into control of the operating-system account running CouchDB. It is not described as unauthenticated access, but compromise or misuse of an admin account could become remote code execution. Upgrade is explicitly recommended. Exposure is limited to Apache CouchDB deployments in the affected version ranges, especially where the administrative HTTP(S) API is reachable and admin credentials are shared, weak, or compromised. Systems already running CouchDB 1.7.2, 2.1.2, or later are not identified as affected in the provided bundle. Prioritize remediation for internet-exposed or business-critical CouchDB systems. Although the flaw requires admin access, the consequence is server-side code execution as the CouchDB OS user, so credential compromise can become infrastructure compromise. Mitigation focus: Upgrade CouchDB 1.x deployments to 1.7.2 or later.; Upgrade CouchDB 2.x deployments to 2.1.2 or later.; Restrict administrative HTTP(S) API access to trusted networks and operators..
