CVE-2018-7162: All versions of Node.js 9.x and 10.x are vulnerable and the severity is HIGH.

All versions of Node.js 9.x and 10.x are vulnerable and the severity is HIGH. An attacker can cause a denial of service (DoS) by causing a node process which provides an http server supporting TLS server to crash. This can be accomplished by sending duplicate/unexpected messages during the handshake. This vulnerability has been addressed by updating the TLS implementation.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Node.js 9.x and 10.x services that expose HTTPS could be crashed by malformed TLS handshake traffic. The business impact is service outage, not data theft based on the supplied sources. Public sources describe this as high severity and fixed through a TLS implementation update. Exposure is most likely in applications still running Node.js 9.x or 10.x and serving HTTP over TLS, especially internet-facing APIs, web apps, or services packaged from older distribution builds. Treat as high priority where older Node.js 9.x or 10.x systems remain in production, because a reachable service could be taken offline without needing application credentials. Mitigation focus: Upgrade affected Node.js 9.x and 10.x deployments to vendor-fixed releases.; Prioritize internet-facing HTTPS services and critical APIs.; Check operating-system package advisories, including Gentoo where relevant..
