CVE-2018-3832: An exploitable firmware update vulnerability exists in Insteon Hub running firmware version 1013.

An exploitable firmware update vulnerability exists in Insteon Hub running firmware version 1013. The HTTP server allows for uploading arbitrary MPFS binaries that could be modified to enable access to hidden resources which allow for uploading unsigned firmware images to the device. To trigger this vulnerability, an attacker can upload an MPFS binary via the '/mpfsupload' HTTP form and later on upload the firmware via a POST request to 'firmware.htm'.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Insteon Hub 2245-222 firmware 1013 has a critical update-process flaw. A user with hub access could upload modified content that exposes hidden firmware-update functions, then load unsigned firmware. Business impact is potential full device compromise, including loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability for connected smart-home or building-control functions.

Executive priority

Treat this as high-priority for any affected deployed hubs. The practical urgency depends on whether management access is exposed beyond trusted administrators.

Technical view

The hub HTTP server accepts arbitrary MPFS binaries. Modified MPFS content can expose hidden resources that allow unsigned firmware uploads. The CVSS 3.0 score is 9.9 with network attack vector, low complexity, low privileges, no user interaction, changed scope, and high CIA impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to Insteon Hub 2245-222 devices running firmware 1013, especially where the hub HTTP interface is reachable by untrusted users or networks.

Exploitation context

The CVE is not listed as KEV in the provided bundle. The sources describe exploitability but do not provide evidence of active exploitation in the wild.

Researcher notes

No CWE is listed in the provided CVE data. Patch status is not named in the source bundle. Avoid assuming broader Insteon products are affected without vendor evidence.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify Insteon Hub 2245-222 devices and confirm firmware version.
  • Check Insteon or vendor guidance for fixed firmware or support status.
  • Restrict hub HTTP access to trusted management networks only.
  • Remove any internet exposure to the hub management interface.
  • If no supported fix exists, isolate or replace affected hubs.
  • Monitor for unexpected firmware, configuration, or behavior changes.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory hubs and record model and firmware version.
  • Verify whether firmware 1013 is present.
  • Confirm the HTTP management interface is not externally reachable.
  • Review access controls for users who can reach hub management.
  • Check device state for unexpected firmware or configuration changes.
  • Document vendor guidance, patch status, or replacement decision.
