CVE-2018-2909: Vulnerability in the Oracle VM VirtualBox component of Oracle Virtualization (subcomponent: Core).

Vulnerability in the Oracle VM VirtualBox component of Oracle Virtualization (subcomponent: Core). The supported version that is affected is Prior to 5.2.20. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with logon to the infrastructure where Oracle VM VirtualBox executes to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker and while the vulnerability is in Oracle VM VirtualBox, attacks may significantly impact additional products. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in takeover of Oracle VM VirtualBox. CVSS 3.0 Base Score 8.6 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H).

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2018-2909 is a serious Oracle VM VirtualBox Core vulnerability affecting supported versions before 5.2.20. If exploited, it can let an unauthenticated attacker who already has logon access to the host environment take over VirtualBox, with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact. Exposure is most likely on developer, analyst, QA, lab, or server systems running Oracle VM VirtualBox before 5.2.20. Network-only exposure is not supported by the CVSS vector; the attacker must have local logon access to the VirtualBox execution environment. High priority for environments using VirtualBox, especially on privileged workstations or shared infrastructure. The business concern is potential takeover of a virtualization component after local access and user interaction. If VirtualBox is absent or already updated past 5.2.20, urgency is materially lower. Mitigation focus: Identify all systems running Oracle VM VirtualBox.; Upgrade VirtualBox installations prior to 5.2.20.; Review Oracle CPU October 2018 guidance for supported update paths..
