Vulnerability in the Java SE, Java SE Embedded, JRockit component of Oracle Java SE (subcomponent: Concurrency). Supported versions that are affected are Java SE: 7u171, 8u162 and 10; Java SE Embedded: 8u161; JRockit: R28.3.17. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise Java SE, Java SE Embedded, JRockit. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a partial denial of service (partial DOS) of Java SE, Java SE Embedded, JRockit. Note: Applies to client and server deployment of Java. This vulnerability can be exploited through sandboxed Java Web Start applications and sandboxed Java applets. It can also be exploited by supplying data to APIs in the specified Component without using sandboxed Java Web Start applications or sandboxed Java applets, such as through a web service. CVSS 3.0 Base Score 5.3 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L).

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2018-2796 is a Java vulnerability that can let an unauthenticated network attacker trigger partial denial of service. It affects specific Oracle Java SE, Java SE Embedded, and JRockit versions. The business impact is service disruption, not data theft or code execution based on the provided sources. Exposure is most likely where affected Java runtimes process untrusted network-supplied data, including Java-backed web services. Legacy client exposure may exist through sandboxed Java Web Start applications or applets. Embedded Java in vendor products may also be relevant where advisories apply. Handle through normal patch management with moderate priority. Raise urgency for internet-facing Java services, critical operational systems, or vendor appliances where partial outage would affect customers or operations. The provided evidence does not support emergency treatment for active exploitation. Mitigation focus: Upgrade affected Oracle Java runtimes using Oracle or OS vendor security advisories.; Patch Linux distribution packages from Red Hat, Debian, Ubuntu, or Gentoo where applicable.; Review vendor product advisories for appliances or software embedding Java..
