CVE-2018-20487: An issue was discovered in the firewall3 component in Inteno IOPSYS 1.0 through 3.16.

An issue was discovered in the firewall3 component in Inteno IOPSYS 1.0 through 3.16. The attacker must make a JSON-RPC method call to add a firewall rule as an "include" and point the "path" argument to a malicious script or binary. This gets executed as root when the firewall changes are committed.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2018-20487 affects the firewall3 component in Inteno IOPSYS 1.0 through 3.16. If an attacker can change firewall configuration through JSON-RPC, they may cause attacker-controlled code to run as root when firewall changes are committed. Exposure is most likely on Inteno IOPSYS 1.0 through 3.16 devices where JSON-RPC or administrative firewall configuration is reachable by untrusted users or networks. Prioritize exposed or remotely managed Inteno IOPSYS devices. The business risk is device compromise with root privileges, but urgency depends on whether administrative JSON-RPC access is reachable by attackers. Mitigation focus: Restrict JSON-RPC and device administration to trusted management networks only.; Check Inteno or device-vendor firmware guidance for a fixed release.; Review the referenced Inteno commit before assessing patch status..
