In PaperStream IP (TWAIN) 1.42.0.5685 (Service Update 7), the FJTWSVIC service running with SYSTEM privilege processes unauthenticated messages received over the FjtwMkic_Fjicube_32 named pipe. One of these message processing functions attempts to dynamically load the UninOldIS.dll library and executes an exported function named ChangeUninstallString. The default install does not contain this library and therefore if any DLL with that name exists in any directory listed in the PATH variable, it can be used to escalate to SYSTEM level privilege.

Security readout for executives and security teams

PaperStream IP (TWAIN) 1.42.0.5685 Service Update 7 can let a local user gain SYSTEM-level privileges. The issue is tied to a privileged service loading a missing DLL name from PATH locations. This matters most on shared workstations, scan stations, kiosks, or endpoints where low-privileged users can log in. Exposure appears limited to systems running PaperStream IP (TWAIN) 1.42.0.5685 Service Update 7, especially Windows endpoints with writable PATH directories or multiple local users. Prioritize remediation for shared or user-accessible Windows systems because this can turn local access into full machine compromise. Internet exposure is not indicated by the bundle. Mitigation focus: Inventory systems for PaperStream IP (TWAIN) 1.42.0.5685 Service Update 7.; Check vendor guidance for fixed versions or supported remediation.; Restrict write access to directories listed in system PATH..
