CVE-2018-15658: An issue was discovered in 42Gears SureMDM before 2018-11-27.

An issue was discovered in 42Gears SureMDM before 2018-11-27. By visiting the page found at /console/ConsolePage/Master.html, an attacker is able to see the markup that would be presented to an authenticated user. This is caused by the session validation occurring after the initial markup is loaded. This results in a list of unprotected API endpoints that disclose call logs, SMS logs, and user-account data.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

SureMDM could show an unauthenticated visitor page markup intended for logged-in users. That markup exposed API endpoints associated with call logs, SMS logs, and user-account data, creating a privacy and management-console exposure risk for affected deployments.

Executive priority

Prioritize if SureMDM manages employee devices or contains message, call, or account data. The issue concerns sensitive MDM data exposure, but current sources do not prove active exploitation.

Technical view

In 42Gears SureMDM before 2018-11-27, session validation occurred after initial markup loaded at /console/ConsolePage/Master.html. The CVE states this disclosed unprotected API endpoints that could expose call logs, SMS logs, and user-account data.

Likely exposure

Organizations running 42Gears SureMDM versions before 2018-11-27, especially where the SureMDM console is reachable by untrusted networks or the internet.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or cited evidence of active exploitation. Public research disclosed multiple SureMDM vulnerabilities in January 2019, and the CVE was published on February 5, 2019.

Researcher notes

The affected range is described only as “before 2018-11-27,” with no CVSS, CWE, or detailed vendor advisory in the supplied bundle. Avoid assuming exact fixed versions beyond that date without vendor confirmation.

Mitigation direction

  • Confirm SureMDM is newer than 2018-11-27 or obtain 42Gears remediation guidance.
  • Limit SureMDM console access to trusted networks and administrators.
  • Review exposed console and API access logs for unauthenticated requests.
  • Review accounts and sensitive device-management data for suspicious access.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory SureMDM deployments and record version or build date.
  • Verify whether the console path is reachable without authentication.
  • Confirm exposed API endpoints require valid authenticated sessions.
  • Review logs for access to /console/ConsolePage/Master.html and related APIs.
