CVE-2018-15421: Cisco Webex Network Recording Player Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities

A vulnerability in the Cisco Webex Network Recording Player for Microsoft Windows and the Cisco Webex Player for Microsoft Windows could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on an affected system. The vulnerability exist because the affected software improperly validates Advanced Recording Format (ARF) and Webex Recording Format (WRF) files. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a user a malicious ARF or WRF file via a link or an email attachment and persuading the user to open the file by using the affected software. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected system.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This is a user-assisted remote code execution issue in Cisco Webex recording players for Windows. A malicious meeting recording file could run attacker-controlled code if a user opens it with affected software. Business risk is endpoint compromise, but the provided sources do not show active exploitation or complete version details. Exposure is most likely on Windows endpoints with Cisco Webex Network Recording Player or Webex Player installed, especially users who receive Webex recording files by email or links. The source bundle does not provide affected version ranges. Treat this as high priority where Webex recording players remain deployed. The risk is workstation takeover through a file-open workflow, not internet-exposed server compromise. Prioritize inventory, vendor-guided updates, and reducing unnecessary player installations. Mitigation focus: Review Cisco advisory cisco-sa-20180919-webex for fixed versions and vendor guidance.; Update or remove affected Cisco Webex recording players on Windows endpoints.; Block or quarantine unexpected ARF and WRF attachments where business processes allow..
