CVE-2018-15419: Cisco Webex Network Recording Player and Cisco Webex Player Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities

A vulnerability in the Cisco Webex Network Recording Player for Microsoft Windows and the Cisco Webex Player for Microsoft Windows could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on an affected system. The vulnerability exist because the affected software improperly validates Advanced Recording Format (ARF) and Webex Recording Format (WRF) files. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a user a malicious ARF or WRF file via a link or an email attachment and persuading the user to open the file by using the affected software. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected system.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This is a Windows desktop player risk. If a user opens a malicious Webex recording file, an attacker could run code on that user's machine. The source bundle does not provide affected version ranges or confirmed exploitation. Exposure is most likely on Windows endpoints with Cisco Webex Network Recording Player or Cisco Webex Player installed, especially where users receive recording links or attachments. The bundle lists versions as unavailable. Treat as high priority where the vulnerable Windows players are deployed. Business urgency depends on endpoint prevalence and exposure to external recording files; missing version data means asset validation should come first. Mitigation focus: Inventory Windows endpoints for Cisco Webex recording players.; Review Cisco's advisory for affected and fixed versions.; Remove unused Webex recording players from endpoints..

Improper Input Validation

Improper Input Validation represents a recurring weakness pattern that can create exploitable paths when design, validation, or implementation controls are missing.
