CVE-2018-15417: Cisco Webex Network Recording Player and Cisco Webex Player Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities

A vulnerability in the Cisco Webex Network Recording Player for Microsoft Windows and the Cisco Webex Player for Microsoft Windows could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on an affected system. The vulnerability exist because the affected software improperly validates Advanced Recording Format (ARF) and Webex Recording Format (WRF) files. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a user a malicious ARF or WRF file via a link or an email attachment and persuading the user to open the file by using the affected software. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected system.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This flaw can let an attacker run code on a Windows computer if a user opens a malicious Webex recording file. The risk is mainly phishing or file-delivery based: the attacker must convince someone to open an ARF or WRF file with the affected Cisco player. Exposure is likely limited to Windows endpoints where Cisco Webex Network Recording Player or Cisco Webex Player is installed and used to open ARF or WRF recordings. Exact vulnerable versions are not provided in the source bundle. Treat this as a targeted endpoint risk, not an internet-exposed server emergency. Prioritize organizations with Webex recording workflows, frequent external file exchange, or high-risk users who may receive meeting recordings from outside parties. Mitigation focus: Check Cisco’s advisory for affected and fixed release details.; Update or remove affected Webex recording players on Windows endpoints.; Restrict unsolicited ARF and WRF attachments where business use allows..
