CVE-2018-15415: Cisco Webex Network Recording Player and Cisco Webex Player Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities

A vulnerability in the Cisco Webex Network Recording Player for Microsoft Windows and the Cisco Webex Player for Microsoft Windows could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on an affected system. The vulnerability exist because the affected software improperly validates Advanced Recording Format (ARF) and Webex Recording Format (WRF) files. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a user a malicious ARF or WRF file via a link or an email attachment and persuading the user to open the file by using the affected software. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected system.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This is a user-assisted remote code execution issue in Cisco Webex recording players on Windows. If a user opens a malicious ARF or WRF recording, an attacker could run code on that endpoint. The provided sources do not include CVSS scoring or affected version detail. Exposure is most likely on Windows endpoints where Cisco Webex recording playback software remains installed, especially systems receiving ARF or WRF files by email or links. The bundle does not provide affected version ranges. Prioritize remediation where Webex recording players are installed on user workstations or privileged administrator endpoints. Business urgency is high because successful exploitation could execute attacker code, but the current bundle does not show active exploitation. Mitigation focus: Check Cisco's advisory for fixed releases and vendor guidance.; Update or remove affected Cisco Webex recording players on Windows.; Do not open unsolicited ARF or WRF recording files..
