CVE-2018-15411: Cisco Webex Network Recording Player and Cisco Webex Player Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities

A vulnerability in the Cisco Webex Network Recording Player for Microsoft Windows and the Cisco Webex Player for Microsoft Windows could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on an affected system. The vulnerability exist because the affected software improperly validates Advanced Recording Format (ARF) and Webex Recording Format (WRF) files. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a user a malicious ARF or WRF file via a link or an email attachment and persuading the user to open the file by using the affected software. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected system.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This flaw lets a malicious Webex recording file become a code-execution vehicle on Windows systems running affected Cisco Webex player software. An attacker still needs to trick a user into opening an ARF or WRF file, so the business risk is targeted compromise of user workstations rather than direct server exposure. Exposure is likely limited to Windows endpoints with Cisco Webex Network Recording Player or Cisco Webex Player installed, especially users who receive or open ARF or WRF recordings. The bundle does not provide affected version ranges. Prioritize remediation where Webex recording players remain installed, particularly on high-value user workstations. This is not described as remotely exploitable without user interaction, but successful exploitation could give an attacker code execution on the user's system. Mitigation focus: Review Cisco's advisory for affected releases and fixed software.; Update or remove affected Cisco Webex player software on Windows endpoints.; Restrict opening ARF and WRF files to trusted sources until remediated..
