From Apache Tika versions 1.7 to 1.17, clients could send carefully crafted headers to tika-server that could be used to inject commands into the command line of the server running tika-server. This vulnerability only affects those running tika-server on a server that is open to untrusted clients. The mitigation is to upgrade to Tika 1.18.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Apache Tika server versions 1.7 through 1.17 could allow attackers to turn specially formed request headers into operating-system commands on the server. The risk matters when tika-server is reachable by untrusted clients. Affected deployments should upgrade to Tika 1.18 and avoid exposing tika-server directly. Exposure is most likely in services running tika-server where clients, tenants, partners, or internet users can submit requests directly. Internal-only use is lower risk, but still important if untrusted files or requests can reach tika-server through another application. Prioritize remediation for any exposed tika-server deployment because the issue can lead to command execution on the host. If tika-server is isolated to trusted internal workflows, schedule upgrade through normal emergency patching, with exposure review first. Mitigation focus: Upgrade Apache Tika to version 1.18 or later.; Restrict tika-server access to trusted networks and callers.; Place tika-server behind authenticated application controls where possible..
