Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2018-1327 affects Apache Struts applications using the REST Plugin with vulnerable XStream-based XML handling. A malicious XML request can cause denial of service, disrupting application availability. The named fix is Apache Struts 2.5.16 with Jackson XML handling or a custom handler based on it. Exposure is most likely in internet-facing or partner-facing Struts applications that use the REST Plugin and accept XML requests on affected versions. Struts deployments without the REST Plugin or without XML REST handling are less likely exposed based on the provided sources. Treat this as a targeted availability risk, not a broad confirmed compromise. Prioritize systems where Struts REST XML endpoints are externally reachable or business-critical, then upgrade and verify handler configuration. Mitigation focus: Upgrade affected Apache Struts deployments to version 2.5.16 or later.; Switch REST XML handling to the optional Jackson XML handler.; Consider a custom XML handler based on the Struts 2.5.16 Jackson handler..
