CVE-2018-1316: The ODE process deployment web service was sensible to deployment messages with forged names.

The ODE process deployment web service was sensible to deployment messages with forged names. Using a path for the name was allowing directory traversal, resulting in the potential writing of files under unwanted locations, the overwriting of existing files or their deletion. This issue was addressed in Apache ODE 1.3.3 which was released in 2009, however the incorrect name CVE-2008-2370 was used on the advisory by mistake.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2018-1316 affects Apache ODE before 1.3.3. A forged process deployment name could use path traversal, potentially causing files to be written outside intended locations, overwritten, or deleted. The issue was fixed long ago in Apache ODE 1.3.3, but the original advisory used the wrong CVE ID. Exposure is likely limited to organizations still running Apache ODE versions before 1.3.3, especially where the process deployment web service is reachable by untrusted users or networks. Evidence does not identify affected downstream products or managed services. Prioritize remediation if Apache ODE is present and the deployment service is reachable. This is an old, corrected issue, but the impact can include unintended file writes, overwrites, or deletions. If Apache ODE is not used, document non-exposure and close. Mitigation focus: Upgrade Apache ODE to 1.3.3 or later.; Restrict deployment web service access to trusted administrators and networks.; Review Apache guidance because the original advisory used the wrong CVE ID..
