In Apache httpd 2.2.0 to 2.4.29, when generating an HTTP Digest authentication challenge, the nonce sent to prevent reply attacks was not correctly generated using a pseudo-random seed. In a cluster of servers using a common Digest authentication configuration, HTTP requests could be replayed across servers by an attacker without detection.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Apache HTTP Server could create weak Digest authentication nonces. In clustered deployments sharing Digest authentication settings, an attacker might replay captured HTTP requests across servers without the normal replay protection noticing. Exposure is most likely where Apache HTTP Server uses HTTP Digest authentication, especially across clustered servers with shared Digest configuration. Single-server deployments or systems not using Digest authentication are less clearly exposed from the provided evidence. Treat as a targeted authentication replay risk, not a broad remote code execution issue. Remediate during normal security patch cycles, faster for exposed clustered services protecting sensitive functions. Mitigation focus: Update Apache HTTP Server through vendor-supported packages or Apache guidance.; Prioritize internet-facing or privileged Digest-authenticated clustered services.; Review distribution advisories from Ubuntu, Debian, Red Hat, and affected vendors..
