CVE-2018-1261: Spring-integration-zip versions prior to 1.0.1 exposes an arbitrary file write vulnerability, which can be...

Spring-integration-zip versions prior to 1.0.1 exposes an arbitrary file write vulnerability, which can be achieved using a specially crafted zip archive (affects other archives as well, bzip2, tar, xz, war, cpio, 7z) that holds path traversal filenames. So when the filename gets concatenated to the target extraction directory, the final path ends up outside of the target folder.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This flaw can let a malicious archive write files outside the intended extraction folder. Business impact depends on where extraction runs and what the process can write. Systems that ingest customer, partner, or automated archive uploads deserve prompt review. Exposure is most likely in Java applications using Spring Integration Zip or listed affected Spring Integration versions to process archives from untrusted or semi-trusted sources. Prioritize remediation where archive upload or ingestion is exposed to external parties. Internal-only, tightly controlled archive workflows are lower urgency but still need dependency cleanup. Mitigation focus: Upgrade Spring Integration Zip to 1.0.1 or later where applicable.; For listed Spring Integration lines, move to 5.0.6 or 4.3.17 or later.; Check current vendor guidance for exact package and version mapping..
