CVE-2018-1237: Dell EMC ScaleIO versions prior to 2.5, contain improper restriction of excessive authentication attempts o...

Dell EMC ScaleIO versions prior to 2.5, contain improper restriction of excessive authentication attempts on the Light installation Agent (LIA). This component is deployed on every server in the ScaleIO cluster and is used for central management of ScaleIO nodes. A remote malicious user, having network access to LIA, could potentially exploit this vulnerability to launch brute force guessing of user names and passwords of user accounts on the LIA.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Dell EMC ScaleIO before version 2.5 allowed too many authentication attempts against its Light Installation Agent. Because LIA is deployed on every ScaleIO cluster server for central management, exposed instances could let an attacker repeatedly guess usernames and passwords. Organizations running Dell EMC ScaleIO versions prior to 2.5 are the known affected population. Exposure is higher where LIA is reachable from untrusted networks or broad internal segments. Treat as a targeted infrastructure management risk. Prioritize if ScaleIO is still in use, especially in environments where LIA is broadly reachable or credentials may be weak or reused. Mitigation focus: Upgrade ScaleIO versions prior to 2.5 following Dell EMC guidance.; Restrict network access to LIA to trusted management hosts.; Enforce strong, unique credentials for LIA accounts..
