CVE-2018-10485: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on vulnerable installations of...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within U3D Texture Height structures. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in a read past the end of an allocated data structure. An attacker can leverage this in conjunction with other vulnerabilities to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-5412.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935 can expose sensitive information when a user opens a malicious file or visits a malicious page. The flaw is not listed as actively exploited in CISA KEV, but it could help an attacker when combined with other vulnerabilities.

Executive priority

Treat as a targeted endpoint hygiene issue, not an emergency based on current evidence. Prioritize remediation where Foxit Reader is used on systems handling email attachments, downloaded documents, or sensitive data.

Technical view

CVE-2018-10485 is a CWE-125 out-of-bounds read in Foxit Reader’s handling of U3D Texture Height structures. Improper validation of user-supplied data can read past an allocated structure. ZDI notes possible use with other flaws to execute code in the current process.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to endpoints running Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935, especially users who open untrusted PDFs or browser-delivered content. Evidence in the bundle does not identify other affected Foxit products or versions.

Exploitation context

User interaction is required: the target must open a malicious file or visit a malicious page. The source bundle does not show known active exploitation, public weaponization, or CISA KEV listing.

Researcher notes

The bundle provides affected version, bug class, vulnerable parsing area, and interaction requirements, but no CVSS, patch version, proof of active exploitation, or broad product matrix. Avoid expanding scope beyond Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935 without vendor confirmation.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory endpoints for Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935.
  • Check Foxit security bulletins for the fixed release guidance.
  • Upgrade affected installations according to Foxit guidance.
  • Reduce exposure to untrusted PDF files and unknown document links.
  • Use endpoint controls to restrict risky document handling where practical.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935 exists in software inventory.
  • Review vulnerability scanner results for CVE-2018-10485.
  • Verify upgraded endpoints no longer report the affected version.
  • Check email and web controls for suspicious PDF delivery attempts.
