CVE-2018-10476: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on vulnerable installations of...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of U3D Model Node structures. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in a read past the end of an allocated structure. An attacker can leverage this in conjunction with other vulnerabilities to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-5395.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2018-10476 is an information disclosure flaw in Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935. A victim must open a malicious file or visit a malicious page. By itself, the source describes out-of-bounds reading, but it may help an attacker when chained with other flaws.

Executive priority

Treat this as a targeted document-handling risk, not an internet-exposed emergency. Prioritize remediation where Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935 remains in use, especially for staff likely to open external files.

Technical view

The flaw is a CWE-125 out-of-bounds read in Foxit Reader parsing of U3D Model Node structures. Improper validation of user-supplied data can read past an allocated structure. ZDI tracked it as ZDI-CAN-5395 / ZDI-18-386.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to installations of Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935 that process untrusted documents or web-delivered content. The bundle does not identify other Foxit products or versions as affected.

Exploitation context

The bundle does not report active exploitation and marks KEV as false. Exploitation requires user interaction. The source says an attacker could combine this issue with other vulnerabilities to execute code in the current process.

Researcher notes

Evidence is concise and incomplete: no CVSS vector, no fixed version, and no active exploitation source is provided. The key validation question is whether version 9.0.0.29935 exists in the environment and whether vendor bulletin guidance has been applied.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory endpoints for Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935.
  • Check Foxit security bulletins for the vendor-fixed version and update guidance.
  • Limit opening untrusted PDF or U3D-containing content in vulnerable Reader versions.
  • Use endpoint controls to reduce exposure to unsolicited document attachments and links.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm installed Foxit Reader versions on managed endpoints.
  • Verify whether any host still runs version 9.0.0.29935.
  • Review Foxit bulletin guidance before declaring remediation complete.
  • Check security tooling for document-based alerts involving Foxit Reader processes.

Out-of-bounds Read

Out-of-bounds Read represents a recurring weakness pattern that can create exploitable paths when design, validation, or implementation controls are missing.
