CVE-2018-10473: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit R...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of U3D CLOD Base Mesh Continuation structures. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in a write past the end of an allocated structure. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code under the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-5392.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2018-10473 is a Foxit Reader flaw that can let an attacker run code if a user opens a malicious file or visits a malicious page. The known affected version is Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935. Business risk is highest where legacy Foxit Reader is still installed on workstations.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority legacy endpoint cleanup issue. It is not KEV-listed in the provided bundle, but it enables code execution after common user actions involving documents or web pages.

Technical view

The flaw is an out-of-bounds write, CWE-787, in parsing U3D CLOD Base Mesh Continuation structures. Improper validation of user-supplied data can write past an allocated structure and allow code execution in the Foxit Reader process context. It was tracked as ZDI-CAN-5392 and ZDI-18-383.

Likely exposure

Exposure appears limited to vulnerable Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935 installations. The source bundle does not identify other Foxit products, platforms, or versions as affected. Organizations with unmanaged PDF readers or old desktop images should assume possible residual exposure until inventoried.

Exploitation context

The sources describe remote code execution requiring user interaction: the target must open a malicious file or visit a malicious page. The bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or any cited evidence of active exploitation.

Researcher notes

Key evidence is the ZDI advisory text mirrored in the CVE description. No CVSS vector, patch version, exploit-in-the-wild claim, or broader affected-version range is provided in the bundle, so avoid expanding scope beyond Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory endpoints for Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935.
  • Check Foxit security bulletins for the vendor-supported fixed version or guidance.
  • Upgrade, remove, or replace vulnerable Foxit Reader installations per vendor guidance.
  • Reduce handling of untrusted PDFs or web content on systems awaiting remediation.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm installed Foxit Reader versions through endpoint inventory or software management records.
  • Verify vulnerability scanners specifically flag or clear CVE-2018-10473.
  • Review whether vulnerable hosts handle external PDFs or browser-delivered document content.
  • Document exceptions where Foxit guidance cannot be applied immediately.
