CVE-2018-1000057: Jenkins Credentials Binding Plugin 1.14 and earlier masks passwords it provides to build processes in their...

Jenkins Credentials Binding Plugin 1.14 and earlier masks passwords it provides to build processes in their build logs. Jenkins however transforms provided password values, e.g. replacing environment variable references, which could result in values different from but similar to configured passwords being provided to the build. Those values are not subject to masking, and could allow unauthorized users to recover the original password.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This issue could cause Jenkins to fail to hide some secret values in build logs. If a password was transformed before use, the log masking may not match it, letting someone with log access infer the original secret.

Executive priority

Treat this as a moderate-priority CI secret exposure risk. Prioritize environments where Jenkins credentials protect production, cloud, deployment, or source-control access, because leaked secrets can have consequences beyond Jenkins itself.

Technical view

Jenkins Credentials Binding Plugin 1.14 and earlier masked configured passwords, but Jenkins could transform supplied values, such as resolving environment variable references. The transformed, similar value was not covered by masking, creating a potential credential disclosure path through build logs.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely in Jenkins environments using Credentials Binding Plugin 1.14 or earlier, especially where build logs are readable by developers, contractors, or other non-administrative users.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show KEV listing or active exploitation evidence. Abuse appears to require access to affected Jenkins build logs and conditions where Jenkins transformed a credential into an unmasked related value.

Researcher notes

Evidence is limited to the CVE description and Jenkins advisory reference. No CVSS, CWE, CPE, or KEV signal is provided in the bundle. Avoid assuming exploit availability, affected products beyond the named plugin, or a specific fixed version without checking the advisory.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify Jenkins instances using Credentials Binding Plugin 1.14 or earlier.
  • Check Jenkins vendor advisory for fixed versions and upgrade guidance.
  • Restrict build log access to users with a clear operational need.
  • Rotate credentials that may have appeared in affected build logs.
  • Review retention settings for logs containing sensitive build output.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory installed Jenkins plugin versions across controllers.
  • Confirm whether Credentials Binding Plugin is 1.14 or earlier.
  • Review build log permissions for non-administrative users.
  • Assess whether sensitive credentials were used in builds during exposure windows.
  • Check vendor advisory before declaring remediation complete.
