CVE-2018-0407: A vulnerability in the web-based management interface of Cisco Small Business 300 Series (Sx300) Managed Sw...

A vulnerability in the web-based management interface of Cisco Small Business 300 Series (Sx300) Managed Switches could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to conduct a persistent cross-site scripting (XSS) attack against a user of the web-based management interface of an affected device. The vulnerability is due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input by the web-based management interface of an affected device. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by persuading a user of the interface to click a crafted link. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary script code in the context of the interface or allow the attacker to access sensitive browser-based information. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCvi87326.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This Cisco Small Business Sx300 switch issue could let an authenticated attacker plant script that runs in an administrator's browser after a crafted link is clicked. The risk is mainly to network management sessions and browser-held data, not direct unauthenticated device takeover based on the supplied sources. Organizations using Cisco Small Business 300 Series Sx300 Managed Switches with the web management interface enabled are the likely exposure group, especially where administrators access it from shared or less-controlled browsing environments. Treat this as a targeted administration-plane risk. It is not documented here as actively exploited, but affected switches manage network infrastructure, so remediation should be scheduled with normal network maintenance priority. Mitigation focus: Review Cisco advisory cisco-sa-20180801-sb-pxss for vendor guidance and fixed firmware details.; Limit switch web management access to trusted administrative networks or VPN paths.; Avoid exposing the management interface to untrusted users or general office networks..
