A vulnerability in BIOS authentication management of Cisco 5000 Series Enterprise Network Compute System and Cisco Unified Computing (UCS) E-Series Servers could allow an unauthenticated, local attacker to bypass the BIOS authentication and execute actions as an unprivileged user. The vulnerability is due to improper security restrictions that are imposed by the affected system. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by submitting an empty password value to an affected device's BIOS authentication prompt. An exploit could allow the attacker to have access to a restricted set of user-level BIOS commands. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCvh83260.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This issue lets someone with local access get past BIOS authentication on affected Cisco compute systems. The attacker would not need a valid BIOS password, but would need local interaction with the device. The known impact is limited to a restricted set of user-level BIOS commands. Exposure is most relevant for organizations running Cisco 5000 Series ENCS or Cisco UCS E-Series Servers where local console, physical, or equivalent management access is possible. Treat this as a targeted infrastructure hardening item. It is not shown as actively exploited, but it can matter for branch, edge, or shared facilities where local access controls are weaker. Mitigation focus: Identify affected Cisco ENCS and UCS E-Series assets.; Review Cisco’s advisory for affected releases and vendor-provided fixes.; Apply Cisco-recommended updates or mitigations where applicable..

Improper Authentication

Improper Authentication represents a recurring weakness pattern that can create exploitable paths when design, validation, or implementation controls are missing.
