CVE-2018-0325: A vulnerability in the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) call-handling functionality of Cisco IP Phone 7800...

A vulnerability in the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) call-handling functionality of Cisco IP Phone 7800 Series phones and Cisco IP Phone 8800 Series phones could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on an affected phone. The vulnerability is due to incomplete input validation of SIP Session Description Protocol (SDP) parameters by the SDP parser of an affected phone. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a malformed SIP packet to an affected phone. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause all active phone calls on the affected phone to be dropped while the SIP process on the phone unexpectedly restarts, resulting in a DoS condition. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCvf40066.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2018-0325 can let a remote, unauthenticated attacker disrupt individual Cisco 7800 and 8800 Series IP phones. A malformed SIP message can restart the phone’s SIP process and drop active calls, creating a denial-of-service condition for that endpoint. Exposure is limited to Cisco IP Phone 7800 and 8800 Series phones where SIP traffic can reach the device. Business impact is highest in call centers, emergency response workflows, and operational teams dependent on uninterrupted voice calls. Treat as a targeted availability risk, not a data theft issue. Prioritize environments where dropped calls create operational, customer-service, or safety impact, and confirm Cisco remediation guidance before scheduling changes. Mitigation focus: Review Cisco’s advisory for affected releases and vendor-recommended fixed software.; Inventory Cisco 7800 and 8800 Series phones using SIP call handling.; Restrict SIP traffic to trusted voice infrastructure where operationally possible..
