A vulnerability in the web UI of Cisco FXOS and Cisco UCS Fabric Interconnect Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a buffer overflow on an affected system. The vulnerability is due to incorrect input validation in the web UI. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a malicious HTTP or HTTPS packet directed to the physical management interface of an affected system. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause the process to crash and possibly reload the device, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition on the affected system. This vulnerability affects Firepower 4100 Series Next-Generation Firewall, Firepower 9300 Security Appliance, UCS 6200 Series Fabric Interconnects, UCS 6300 Series Fabric Interconnects. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCvb61398, CSCvb86799.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

An unauthenticated remote attacker could crash affected Cisco management software by sending a malicious HTTP or HTTPS packet to the physical management interface. The business impact is availability: security appliances or fabric interconnects could reload and disrupt network operations.

Executive priority

Prioritize systems where management interfaces are exposed beyond trusted admin networks. Treat as an availability risk to firewall and data-center infrastructure, not as confirmed data compromise based on provided sources.

Technical view

CVE-2018-0298 is an input-validation flaw in the web UI of Cisco FXOS and UCS Fabric Interconnect Software. The disclosed impact is buffer overflow leading to process crash and possible device reload, causing denial of service.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most relevant where the physical management interface of affected Cisco Firepower 4100, Firepower 9300, UCS 6200, or UCS 6300 systems is reachable by untrusted networks.

Exploitation context

The provided bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation. Sources describe unauthenticated remote exploitation as possible through malicious HTTP or HTTPS traffic to the management interface.

Researcher notes

Evidence is limited to the CVE description and Cisco advisory reference. No CVSS, fixed versions, workaround details, or exploit-in-the-wild evidence are included in the supplied bundle.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Cisco advisory cisco-sa-20180620-fxos-dos for vendor-fixed software guidance.
  • Restrict management interface access to trusted administrative networks only.
  • Identify devices matching the affected Cisco product families.
  • Monitor affected systems for unexpected web UI crashes or reloads.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Cisco FXOS and UCS Fabric Interconnect deployments.
  • Confirm whether physical management interfaces are reachable from untrusted networks.
  • Map device models to Firepower 4100, Firepower 9300, UCS 6200, or UCS 6300 families.
  • Check Cisco bug IDs CSCvb61398 and CSCvb86799 against local support records.
