CVE-2018-0242: A vulnerability in the WebVPN web-based management interface of Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance could all...

A vulnerability in the WebVPN web-based management interface of Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to conduct a cross-site scripting (XSS) attack against a user of the web-based management interface of an affected device. The vulnerability is due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input by the web-based management interface of an affected device. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by persuading a user of the interface to click a crafted link. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary script code in the context of the interface or allow the attacker to access sensitive browser-based information. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCvg33985.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2018-0242 is a cross-site scripting flaw in Cisco ASA’s WebVPN web-based management interface. An attacker would need to convince an interface user to open a crafted link. If successful, the attacker could run script in that browser context or access sensitive browser-based information. Exposure is most likely on Cisco ASA deployments where the WebVPN web-based management interface is used and reachable by administrators or authorized users. Business risk depends on who can access that interface and what browser-based information is exposed during use. Treat this as a targeted management-plane browser risk, not a broad wormable outage scenario. Prioritize systems with externally reachable WebVPN management access or high-privilege administrators, and confirm Cisco’s remediation guidance before scheduling change work. Mitigation focus: Review Cisco advisory cisco-sa-20180418-asawvpn for affected releases and vendor guidance.; Prioritize remediation for ASA systems where WebVPN management users have privileged access.; Restrict management-interface access to trusted administrative paths where feasible..
