A vulnerability in the CLI of the Cisco StarOS operating system for Cisco ASR 5000 Series Aggregation Services Routers could allow an authenticated, local attacker to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on an affected operating system. The vulnerability is due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input by the affected operating system. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by authenticating to an affected system and injecting malicious arguments into a vulnerable CLI command. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on the affected system. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCvg38807.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2018-0224 lets a logged-in local user on affected Cisco StarOS systems run commands as root through the CLI. For organizations using Cisco ASR 5000 Series routers, this is serious because compromise of an authorized account could become full device control. Exposure is most likely in telecom or network environments running Cisco ASR 5000 Series routers with Cisco StarOS and local CLI access enabled for administrators or operators. Treat as a high-priority network infrastructure issue if ASR 5000 or StarOS is present. The attacker needs authenticated local access, but successful exploitation could give root control of a critical routing platform. Mitigation focus: Review Cisco advisory for affected StarOS releases and any fixed software guidance.; Restrict StarOS CLI access to trusted administrators only.; Remove stale local accounts and enforce least privilege..
