CVE-2018-0214: A vulnerability in certain CLI commands of Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE) could allow an authenticate...

A vulnerability in certain CLI commands of Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE) could allow an authenticated, local attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the host operating system with the privileges of the local user, aka Command Injection. These commands should have been restricted from this user. The vulnerability is due to insufficient input validation of CLI command user input. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by authenticating to the targeted device and issuing a CLI command with crafted user input. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the affected system that should be restricted. The attacker would need to have valid user credentials for the device. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCvf49844.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Cisco ISE devices with this issue allow a logged-in local CLI user to run operating-system commands that should be blocked. The sources do not describe remote unauthenticated compromise. Business urgency depends on whether ISE CLI access is broadly available or tightly limited, because valid device credentials are required. Exposure is limited to Cisco Identity Services Engine deployments where users can authenticate locally and access the affected CLI commands. The source bundle does not identify specific affected or fixed ISE versions, so version-level exposure requires checking Cisco’s advisory and local asset inventory. Treat this as a controlled but important infrastructure risk. It requires credentials, but Cisco ISE is an identity and access-control platform, so misuse by a compromised or malicious local user could have operational impact. Mitigation focus: Review Cisco advisory cisco-sa-20180307-ise3 for affected and fixed ISE releases.; Restrict ISE CLI access to trusted administrative users only.; Remove unused or overprivileged local device accounts..
