CVE-2018-0211: A vulnerability in specific CLI commands for the Cisco Identity Services Engine could allow an authenticate...

A vulnerability in specific CLI commands for the Cisco Identity Services Engine could allow an authenticated, local attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition. The device may need to be manually rebooted to recover. The vulnerability is due to lack of proper input validation of the CLI user input for certain CLI commands. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by authenticating to the device and issuing a crafted, malicious CLI command on the targeted device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause a DoS condition. The attacker must have valid administrative privileges on the device to exploit this vulnerability. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCvf63414, CSCvh51992.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This issue can let a Cisco ISE administrator-level local user crash the system through certain CLI input. The business impact is availability: identity and access services may be disrupted, and recovery may require a manual reboot. The provided sources do not show active exploitation or a CVSS score. Exposure is limited to Cisco Identity Services Engine deployments where an attacker has, or can obtain, local administrative CLI access. The provided sources do not describe unauthenticated remote exploitation or internet-facing exploitation. Treat as a controlled but real availability risk. Prioritize if Cisco ISE supports critical access-control workflows or if admin credential controls are weak. No active exploitation is evidenced in the provided sources. Mitigation focus: Review Cisco advisory cisco-sa-20180307-ise for affected and fixed ISE releases.; Limit Cisco ISE administrative CLI access to approved administrators only.; Restrict management access to trusted administrative networks..

Improper Input Validation

Improper Input Validation represents a recurring weakness pattern that can create exploitable paths when design, validation, or implementation controls are missing.
