Multiple vulnerabilities in the CLI parser of Cisco IOS XE Software could allow an authenticated, local attacker to inject arbitrary commands into the CLI of the affected software, which could allow the attacker to gain access to the underlying Linux shell of an affected device and execute commands with root privileges on the device. The vulnerabilities exist because the affected software does not sufficiently sanitize command arguments before passing commands to the Linux shell for execution. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by submitting a malicious CLI command to the affected software. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to break from the CLI of the affected software, which could allow the attacker to gain access to the underlying Linux shell on an affected device and execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on the device. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCuz03145, CSCuz56419, CSCva31971, CSCvb09542.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2018-0194 is a Cisco IOS XE command-injection issue. An authenticated local user with CLI access could escape into the underlying Linux shell and run commands as root. This is most urgent where many administrators, contractors, or automation accounts can access network device CLI sessions. Exposure is limited to Cisco IOS XE devices covered by Cisco’s advisory. The bundle does not provide specific affected or fixed versions, so asset owners must compare installed releases against Cisco’s published guidance. Prioritize remediation for critical network infrastructure and devices with broad administrative access. The risk is not unauthenticated internet compromise, but root-level takeover by someone with CLI access or stolen credentials. Mitigation focus: Check Cisco’s advisory for affected releases and fixed software guidance.; Upgrade or remediate IOS XE devices according to Cisco’s published instructions.; Restrict CLI access to trusted administrators and managed automation accounts..

Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command ('OS Command Injection')

Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command ('OS Command Injection') represents a recurring weakness pattern that can create exploitable paths when design, validation, or implementation controls are missing.
