Multiple vulnerabilities in the CLI parser of Cisco IOS XE Software could allow an authenticated, local attacker to inject arbitrary commands into the CLI of the affected software, which could allow the attacker to gain access to the underlying Linux shell of an affected device and execute commands with root privileges on the device. The vulnerabilities exist because the affected software does not sufficiently sanitize command arguments before passing commands to the Linux shell for execution. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by submitting a malicious CLI command to the affected software. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to break from the CLI of the affected software, which could allow the attacker to gain access to the underlying Linux shell on an affected device and execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on the device. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCuz03145, CSCuz56419, CSCva31971, CSCvb09542.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This Cisco IOS XE issue lets someone who already has local authenticated CLI access break out of the network-device command interface and reach the underlying Linux shell as root. That can turn a limited device login into full device control, but the provided sources do not identify affected release ranges or fixed versions. Exposure is most likely on Cisco IOS XE devices where local authenticated users can access the CLI. The source bundle names Cisco IOS XE broadly, but does not provide specific vulnerable versions, platforms, or configurations, so organizations must confirm against Cisco's advisory and their device inventory. Prioritize if IOS XE devices are administered by many users, shared accounts, contractors, or lower-trust operations teams. The impact is full root-level control of a network device, but urgency depends on whether exposed devices match Cisco's affected guidance. Mitigation focus: Check Cisco's advisory for affected releases and fixed software guidance.; Restrict CLI access to trusted administrators only.; Review local accounts, privilege levels, and shared credentials..
