A vulnerability in the CLI parser of Cisco IOS XE Software could allow an authenticated, local attacker to gain access to the underlying Linux shell of an affected device and execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on the device. The vulnerability is due to the affected software improperly sanitizing command arguments to prevent access to internal data structures on a device. An attacker who has privileged EXEC mode (privilege level 15) access to an affected device could exploit this vulnerability on the device by executing CLI commands that contain crafted arguments. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to gain access to the underlying Linux shell of the affected device and execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on the device. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCuv91356.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This issue affects Cisco IOS XE devices and lets someone who already has top-level CLI access reach the device’s underlying Linux shell as root. It is not described as remote unauthenticated exploitation, but it can turn an administrator-account compromise into full operating-system control of network equipment. Exposure is most likely on Cisco IOS XE devices where affected software is deployed and privilege level 15 access is granted to administrators, support users, or automation accounts. The source bundle does not provide specific affected or fixed release numbers. Prioritize remediation for critical routers, switches, and edge infrastructure where many administrators or automation accounts have privileged access. The business risk is highest if privileged credentials are weak, shared, or exposed. Mitigation focus: Review Cisco’s advisory for affected releases, fixed software, and official workarounds.; Restrict privilege level 15 access to trusted, named administrators only.; Remove stale, shared, or unnecessary privileged CLI accounts..
