A vulnerability in the 802.1x multiple-authentication (multi-auth) feature of Cisco IOS Software could allow an unauthenticated, adjacent attacker to bypass the authentication phase on an 802.1x multi-auth port. The vulnerability is due to a logic change error introduced into the code. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by trying to access an 802.1x multi-auth port after a successful supplicant has authenticated. An exploit could allow the attacker to bypass the 802.1x access controls and obtain access to the network. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCvg69701.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This flaw could let someone with local network access bypass 802.1x controls on certain Cisco IOS multi-auth ports after a legitimate device has authenticated. The business concern is unauthorized network access, not remote internet compromise. Public severity and CVSS details were not provided in the source bundle. Exposure is most likely on Cisco IOS devices using 802.1x multi-authentication ports. Systems not using this feature, or not reachable by an adjacent attacker, are less likely to be exposed based on the provided description. Treat this as a priority for network access environments using Cisco IOS 802.1x multi-auth. The flaw can undermine a control often relied on to keep unauthorized devices off internal networks, but evidence in the provided sources does not indicate active exploitation. Mitigation focus: Review Cisco advisory cisco-sa-20180328-dot1x for affected releases and vendor guidance.; Inventory Cisco IOS devices using 802.1x multi-authentication.; Prioritize remediation on user-access ports in sensitive network zones..

Improper Authentication

Improper Authentication represents a recurring weakness pattern that can create exploitable paths when design, validation, or implementation controls are missing.
