A vulnerability in the forwarding information base (FIB) code of Cisco IOS XR Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause inconsistency between the routing information base (RIB) and the FIB, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. The vulnerability is due to incorrect processing of extremely long routing updates. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a large routing update. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to trigger inconsistency between the FIB and the RIB, resulting in a DoS condition. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCus84718.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2018-0132 is a Cisco IOS XR denial-of-service issue in routing infrastructure. A remote unauthenticated attacker could cause a mismatch between routing data used for decisions and forwarding data used to move traffic, potentially disrupting network service. Exposure is most relevant to organizations running Cisco IOS XR on routers that process routing updates. The provided bundle does not identify exact versions, platforms, configurations, or whether only specific routing protocols are affected. Treat this as a network availability risk. It is not described as data theft or code execution, but disruption to core routing can have broad operational impact. Prioritize if Cisco IOS XR supports critical connectivity. Mitigation focus: Inventory Cisco IOS XR routers and map them to Cisco advisory guidance.; Check Cisco’s advisory for affected releases, fixed software, and vendor-supported workarounds.; Prioritize remediation for routers processing untrusted or externally originated routing updates..
