CVE-2018-0122: A vulnerability in the CLI of the Cisco StarOS operating system for Cisco ASR 5000 Series Aggregation Servi...

A vulnerability in the CLI of the Cisco StarOS operating system for Cisco ASR 5000 Series Aggregation Services Routers could allow an authenticated, local attacker to overwrite system files that are stored in the flash memory of an affected system. The vulnerability is due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input by the affected operating system. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by injecting crafted command arguments into a vulnerable CLI command for the affected operating system. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to overwrite or modify arbitrary files that are stored in the flash memory of an affected system. To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker would need to authenticate to an affected system by using valid administrator credentials. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCvf93335.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This vulnerability affects Cisco StarOS on ASR 5000 routers. A person who already has valid administrator access to the local CLI could modify or overwrite files stored in flash memory, potentially affecting device integrity or stability. Exposure is likely limited to organizations operating Cisco ASR 5000 Series routers with StarOS. The attacker must have valid administrator credentials and local CLI access, so this is not described as unauthenticated internet exposure. Treat this as a targeted infrastructure integrity risk, not a broad remote emergency. Prioritize organizations using Cisco ASR 5000 platforms, especially where many operators hold administrator access. Mitigation focus: Identify Cisco ASR 5000 Series systems running StarOS.; Review Cisco advisory cisco-sa-20180207-asr for fixed releases or vendor-approved workarounds.; Restrict administrator CLI access to trusted management networks and named operators..
