CVE-2017-9505: Atlassian Confluence starting with 4.3.0 before 6.2.1 did not check if a user had permission to view a page...

Atlassian Confluence starting with 4.3.0 before 6.2.1 did not check if a user had permission to view a page when creating a workbox notification about new comments. An attacker who can login to Confluence could receive workbox notifications, which contain the content of comments, for comments added to a page after they started watching it even if they do not have permission to view the page itself.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This flaw could let a logged-in Confluence user receive notification text from comments on pages they were not allowed to view. It is a confidentiality issue, not described as remote unauthenticated compromise. The business concern is leakage of sensitive page discussions through workbox notifications on affected Confluence Server versions. Exposure is limited to Atlassian Confluence Server deployments running versions from 4.3.0 before 6.2.1, with users able to log in and watch relevant content. Prioritize remediation for Confluence systems containing confidential internal, customer, legal, or security discussions. The issue is not described as system takeover, but it can bypass access expectations for sensitive comments. Mitigation focus: Upgrade affected Confluence Server instances to version 6.2.1 or later.; Check Atlassian guidance for any supported workaround if upgrade is delayed.; Review access to sensitive spaces and pages on affected instances..
