CVE-2017-9109: An issue was discovered in adns before 1.5.2.

An issue was discovered in adns before 1.5.2. It fails to ignore apparent answers before the first RR that was found the first time. when this is fixed, the second answer scan finds the same RRs at the first. Otherwise, adns can be confused by interleaving answers for the CNAME target, with the CNAME itself. In that case the answer data structure (on the heap) can be overrun. With this fixed, it prefers to look only at the answer RRs which come after the CNAME, which is at least arguably correct.

Security readout for executives and security teams

adns versions before 1.5.2 can mishandle certain DNS answers involving CNAME records. The bug can overrun heap data, creating a memory-corruption risk. The provided sources do not give a CVSS score, impact rating, or evidence of active exploitation. Exposure is limited to systems or applications using adns before 1.5.2. Fedora and openSUSE advisories indicate distribution packages were affected, but the bundle does not identify broader product integrations. Treat as a targeted dependency remediation item, not an emergency, unless vulnerable adns is present in critical exposed services. Lack of severity and exploit evidence lowers urgency, but heap overrun bugs should not be ignored. Mitigation focus: Inventory systems and applications using adns packages or linked adns libraries.; Upgrade adns to 1.5.2 or a vendor-fixed distribution package.; Prioritize internet-facing services that perform DNS lookups through vulnerable adns..
