CVE-2017-6713: A vulnerability in the Play Framework of Cisco Elastic Services Controller (ESC) could allow an unauthentic...

A vulnerability in the Play Framework of Cisco Elastic Services Controller (ESC) could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to gain full access to the affected system. The vulnerability is due to static, default credentials for the Cisco ESC UI that are shared between installations. An attacker who can extract the static credentials from an existing installation of Cisco ESC could generate an admin session token that allows access to all instances of the ESC web UI. This vulnerability affects Cisco Elastic Services Controller prior to releases 2.3.1.434 and 2.3.2. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCvc76627.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Cisco ESC versions before 2.3.1.434 and 2.3.2 used static default credentials in the Play Framework-backed UI. If an attacker obtained those credentials from one installation, they could create an admin session token and access other ESC web UIs. For affected deployments, this is a full administrative control risk. Exposure is limited to organizations running Cisco Elastic Services Controller before releases 2.3.1.434 or 2.3.2, especially where the ESC web UI is reachable from untrusted networks or shared management environments. Prioritize remediation for internet-exposed or broadly reachable ESC management interfaces. The business risk is unauthorized administrative control of network service orchestration infrastructure, not just data exposure. Mitigation focus: Upgrade Cisco ESC to 2.3.1.434, 2.3.2, or a later vendor-supported release.; Review the Cisco advisory for exact upgrade and product guidance.; Restrict ESC web UI access to trusted management networks until remediation is complete..
