CVE-2017-3813: A vulnerability in the Start Before Logon (SBL) module of Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client Software...

A vulnerability in the Start Before Logon (SBL) module of Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client Software for Windows could allow an unauthenticated, local attacker to open Internet Explorer with the privileges of the SYSTEM user. The vulnerability is due to insufficient implementation of the access controls. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by opening the Internet Explorer browser. An exploit could allow the attacker to use Internet Explorer with the privileges of the SYSTEM user. This may allow the attacker to execute privileged commands on the targeted system. This vulnerability affects versions prior to released versions 4.4.00243 and later and 4.3.05017 and later. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCvc43976.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2017-3813 lets a local attacker on a Windows endpoint abuse Cisco AnyConnect Start Before Logon to run Internet Explorer as SYSTEM. That can turn local access into full machine control. It affects older AnyConnect Windows builds before Cisco’s fixed 4.4.00243 and 4.3.05017 releases. Exposure is limited to Windows systems running vulnerable Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client versions with the Start Before Logon module present. Organizations with legacy VPN client deployments, unmanaged laptops, or slow endpoint patching are the most likely to retain exposure. Treat this as a high-priority endpoint hygiene issue where legacy AnyConnect is present. It is local-only, but successful exploitation can grant SYSTEM-level control, making it relevant to ransomware staging, insider risk, and post-compromise privilege escalation. Mitigation focus: Inventory Windows endpoints running Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.; Upgrade affected clients to Cisco’s fixed 4.4.00243 or 4.3.05017 releases or later.; Prioritize systems using Start Before Logon or shared pre-logon workflows..
