In Lenovo Connect2 versions earlier than 4.2.5.4885 for Windows and 4.2.5.3071 for Android, when an ad-hoc connection is made between two systems for the purpose of sharing files, the password for this ad-hoc connection will be stored in a user-readable location. An attacker with read access to the user's contents could connect to the Connect2 hotspot and see the contents of files while they are being transferred between the two systems.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Lenovo Connect2 could store the temporary ad-hoc file-sharing password where a normal user could read it. Someone who already has read access to the user’s contents could use that password to join the Connect2 hotspot and view files while they are being transferred.

Executive priority

Treat this as a targeted data-exposure risk rather than an internet-wide emergency. Prioritize removal or upgrade of legacy Connect2 where sensitive files are transferred or where shared devices increase local access risk.

Technical view

CVE-2017-3742 affects Lenovo Connect2 before 4.2.5.4885 on Windows and 4.2.5.3071 on Android. The issue is insecure storage of the ad-hoc connection password during file sharing, enabling an attacker with read access to user contents to connect and observe in-transit file contents.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to legacy Lenovo Connect2 installations below the fixed Windows or Android versions, especially where users still rely on ad-hoc Connect2 file transfers.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not report active exploitation, and the CVE is not listed as KEV. Exploitation requires prior read access to the user’s contents and an opportunity to access the Connect2 hotspot during transfers.

Researcher notes

The bundle provides no CVSS, CWE, or detailed file path evidence. Analysis should stay bounded to insecure password storage and transfer observation under a local-read-access prerequisite. Do not assume remote exploitation without that prerequisite.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade Lenovo Connect2 to the fixed Windows or Android version, or later.
  • Remove or disable Lenovo Connect2 where it is no longer required.
  • Avoid ad-hoc Connect2 file transfers until affected clients are remediated.
  • Review Lenovo advisory LEN-14398 for vendor-specific guidance.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Windows and Android endpoints for Lenovo Connect2 installations.
  • Confirm versions are at least 4.2.5.4885 on Windows and 4.2.5.3071 on Android.
  • Identify users or workflows still using Connect2 ad-hoc file sharing.
  • Check whether affected systems allow unnecessary user-profile read access.
