CVE-2017-3630: Vulnerability in the Solaris component of Oracle Sun Systems Products Suite (subcomponent: Kernel).

Vulnerability in the Solaris component of Oracle Sun Systems Products Suite (subcomponent: Kernel). Supported versions that are affected are 10 and 11. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows low privileged attacker with logon to the infrastructure where Solaris executes to compromise Solaris. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of Solaris accessible data as well as unauthorized read access to a subset of Solaris accessible data and unauthorized ability to cause a partial denial of service (partial DOS) of Solaris. CVSS 3.0 Base Score 5.3 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L).

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2017-3630 is a Solaris kernel vulnerability affecting Solaris 10 and 11. A low-privileged user who can log on to a Solaris system could read or change some accessible data and cause partial service disruption. This is not described as remotely exploitable. Exposure is likely limited to organizations still running Solaris 10 or 11 where local shell, application, or service accounts exist. Internet exposure alone is not enough based on the local attack vector in the provided sources. Address this in normal vulnerability management cycles, with faster handling for shared Solaris servers, sensitive workloads, or systems with many local users. It is meaningful but not presented as remotely exploitable or actively exploited in the supplied evidence. Mitigation focus: Inventory Solaris 10 and 11 systems.; Review Oracle’s advisory for supported fixes or workarounds.; Restrict local login access to trusted users only..
