An exploitable arbitrary memory read vulnerability exists in the MQTT packet parsing functionality of Cesanta Mongoose 6.8. A specially crafted MQTT packet can cause an arbitrary out-of-bounds memory read and write potentially resulting in information disclosure, denial of service and remote code execution. An attacker needs to send a specially crafted MQTT packet over the network to trigger this vulnerability.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2017-2892 is a critical network-facing flaw in Cesanta Mongoose 6.8 MQTT packet parsing. A malicious MQTT packet can cause memory access outside intended bounds, with possible information disclosure, service crash, or remote code execution.

Executive priority

Treat this as high-priority remediation for any reachable Mongoose 6.8 MQTT deployment because the vulnerability is unauthenticated, network-triggerable, and rated critical. Prioritize internet-facing and embedded operational systems first.

Technical view

The issue is an arbitrary out-of-bounds memory read/write in Mongoose 6.8 MQTT parsing. The CVSS 3.0 vector is network, low complexity, no privileges, no user interaction, with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where Cesanta Mongoose 6.8 is embedded in products or services with MQTT parsing reachable over a network. Internet-facing or broadly reachable MQTT endpoints carry the highest concern.

Exploitation context

The sources describe remote triggering by sending a specially crafted MQTT packet. The bundle does not cite CISA KEV listing or any source confirming active exploitation in the wild.

Researcher notes

Evidence names Cesanta Mongoose 6.8 only. No CWE, fixed version, or product-specific downstream list is included in the bundle. KEV is false, so do not claim known active exploitation from these sources.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify products or services using Cesanta Mongoose 6.8.
  • Check Cesanta and product-vendor guidance for patches or supported upgrade paths.
  • Restrict MQTT access to trusted networks or authenticated private paths.
  • Block unnecessary external access to affected MQTT services.
  • Monitor affected services for crashes, restarts, or anomalous MQTT traffic.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory binaries, firmware, and dependencies for Cesanta Mongoose 6.8.
  • Confirm whether MQTT parsing is enabled and reachable over the network.
  • Review firewall and exposure records for reachable MQTT services.
  • Verify vendor patch, upgrade, or compensating-control status for each instance.
  • Check security monitoring for suspicious MQTT traffic or unexplained service instability.
