CVE-2017-2780: An exploitable heap buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the X509 certificate parsing functionality of I...

An exploitable heap buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the X509 certificate parsing functionality of InsideSecure MatrixSSL 3.8.7b. A specially crafted x509 certificate can cause a buffer overflow on the heap resulting in remote code execution. To trigger this vulnerability, a specially crafted x509 certificate must be presented to the vulnerable client or server application when initiating secure connection.

Security readout for executives and security teams

MatrixSSL 3.8.7b can mishandle a malicious X.509 certificate during secure connection setup. If a vulnerable product uses this library, an unauthenticated network peer may be able to trigger memory corruption with potential remote code execution. The source bundle names MatrixSSL 3.8.7b only and does not identify downstream products. Exposure is likely in products, firmware, or applications bundling MatrixSSL 3.8.7b and validating peer X.509 certificates over network connections. Both client and server roles may be relevant. The provided sources do not name affected downstream vendors, services, appliances, or operating systems. Prioritize confirmed MatrixSSL 3.8.7b deployments, especially in exposed services, embedded products, or systems handling sensitive traffic. Business urgency is high when the vulnerable library is reachable over a network, but scoping matters because the bundle names only one specific library version. Mitigation focus: Inventory applications, firmware, and third-party components for MatrixSSL 3.8.7b.; Check Inside Secure or product-vendor guidance for fixed versions or supported mitigations.; Prioritize remediation for network-exposed TLS clients or servers using this library..
