CVE-2017-2669: Dovecot before version 2.2.29 is vulnerable to a denial of service.

Dovecot before version 2.2.29 is vulnerable to a denial of service. When 'dict' passdb and userdb were used for user authentication, the username sent by the IMAP/POP3 client was sent through var_expand() to perform %variable expansion. Sending specially crafted %variable fields could result in excessive memory usage causing the process to crash (and restart), or excessive CPU usage causing all authentications to hang.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This is a denial-of-service issue in older Dovecot mail servers. If specific dict-based authentication backends are enabled, a remote IMAP or POP3 client could send a crafted username that makes authentication consume excessive memory or CPU, causing crashes or authentication hangs. Exposure is limited to Dovecot deployments older than 2.2.29 that use dict passdb and userdb for authentication. Publicly reachable IMAP or POP3 services increase relevance, but the source bundle does not identify affected downstream package versions beyond vendor advisories. Treat this as a low-priority availability risk unless exposed mail servers run vulnerable Dovecot with dict authentication. Patch during normal maintenance, but raise priority for customer-facing mail platforms where authentication outages would disrupt business operations. Mitigation focus: Upgrade Dovecot to version 2.2.29 or a vendor-fixed package.; Review Debian, Red Hat, and Dovecot advisories for package-specific guidance.; Prioritize systems using dict passdb and userdb for authentication..
