CVE-2017-2637: A design flaw issue was found in the Red Hat OpenStack Platform director use of TripleO to enable libvirtd...

A design flaw issue was found in the Red Hat OpenStack Platform director use of TripleO to enable libvirtd based live-migration. Libvirtd is deployed by default (by director) listening on 0.0.0.0 (all interfaces) with no-authentication or encryption. Anyone able to make a TCP connection to any compute host IP address, including 127.0.0.1, other loopback interface addresses, or in some cases possibly addresses that have been exposed beyond the management interface, could use this to open a virsh session to the libvirtd instance and gain control of virtual machine instances or possibly take over the host.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2017-2637 is a critical Red Hat OpenStack Platform director flaw where TripleO could deploy libvirtd for live migration on all interfaces without authentication or encryption. A reachable attacker could control virtual machine instances and may be able to take over compute hosts. Exposure is most likely in Red Hat OpenStack Platform director deployments using TripleO live migration where compute host libvirtd TCP is reachable from management networks or accidentally exposed beyond them. Treat as urgent for any affected OpenStack private cloud. Prioritize compute hosts because compromise could cross from infrastructure management into tenant VM control and possibly host takeover. Mitigation focus: Apply the relevant Red Hat RHSA updates for affected RHOSP director deployments.; Review Red Hat solution 3022771 and vendor guidance before changing production settings.; Restrict libvirtd TCP reachability to required trusted management paths only..

Missing Authentication for Critical Function

Missing Authentication for Critical Function represents a recurring weakness pattern that can create exploitable paths when design, validation, or implementation controls are missing.
