CVE-2017-18191: An issue was discovered in OpenStack Nova 15.x through 15.1.0 and 16.x through 16.1.1.

An issue was discovered in OpenStack Nova 15.x through 15.1.0 and 16.x through 16.1.1. By detaching and reattaching an encrypted volume, an attacker may access the underlying raw volume and corrupt the LUKS header, resulting in a denial of service attack on the compute host. (The same code error also results in data loss, but that is not a vulnerability because the user loses their own data.) All Nova setups supporting encrypted volumes are affected.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This OpenStack Nova issue can let a user handling encrypted volumes disrupt a compute host by damaging encryption metadata during detach and reattach operations. The business impact is availability loss for cloud workloads on affected Nova deployments that support encrypted volumes. Exposure is limited to OpenStack Nova environments on the affected 15.x or 16.x branches that support encrypted volumes. Deployments without Nova encrypted-volume support are not described as affected in the supplied sources. Prioritize remediation for private or public clouds offering encrypted block volumes. The issue is not cited as actively exploited, but it can affect compute-host availability and tenant workload continuity. Mitigation focus: Apply Nova updates referenced by OpenStack OSSA-2018-001 and relevant vendor advisories.; Check Red Hat advisories if using Red Hat OpenStack packages.; Review vendor guidance before relying on local workarounds..
