CVE-2017-16332: Multiple exploitable buffer overflow vulnerabilities exist in the PubNub message handler for the "cc" chann...

Multiple exploitable buffer overflow vulnerabilities exist in the PubNub message handler for the "cc" channel of Insteon Hub running firmware version 1012. Specially crafted commands sent through the PubNub service can cause a stack-based buffer overflow overwriting arbitrary data. An attacker should send an authenticated HTTP request to trigger this vulnerability. In cmd s_event_alarm, at 0x9d01ec34, the value for the `s_aid` key is copied using `strcpy` to the buffer at `$sp+0x2b0`.This buffer is 32 bytes large, sending anything longer will cause a buffer overflow.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This flaw affects Insteon Hub firmware 1012 and can let an authenticated attacker crash or compromise the device by sending malformed commands through PubNub. The issue is memory corruption in a message handler, not a simple web page bug. Evidence does not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation.

Executive priority

Prioritize affected hubs used in physical security, access, or automation workflows. The business risk is high because successful exploitation could affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability, but evidence of active exploitation is not present in the provided sources.

Technical view

CVE-2017-16332 is a stack-based buffer overflow in the Insteon Hub PubNub "cc" channel handler. In cmd s_event_alarm, the s_aid value is copied with strcpy into a 32-byte stack buffer. Longer input can overwrite stack data. CVSS 3.0 is 8.5, with network reachability, low privileges, high attack complexity, and high CIA impact.

Likely exposure

Organizations are most likely exposed if they operate Insteon Hub devices running firmware 1012. The source bundle does not specify broader affected versions or CPEs, so teams should verify firmware directly rather than assume all hubs are affected.

Exploitation context

The cited description says exploitation requires specially crafted commands sent through PubNub and an authenticated HTTP request. The source bundle does not indicate public exploit availability, observed attacks, or CISA KEV inclusion.

Researcher notes

The strongest technical detail comes from Talos: strcpy copies s_aid into a 32-byte stack buffer in cmd s_event_alarm. The affected-version data is narrow and incomplete beyond firmware 1012, so confirm device firmware and vendor advisories before scoping broadly.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory Insteon Hub devices and confirm firmware versions.
  • Treat firmware 1012 hubs as affected until vendor guidance says otherwise.
  • Check Insteon or vendor guidance for firmware updates or replacement direction.
  • Limit authenticated access to affected hubs and related cloud accounts.
  • Retire or isolate unsupported affected devices where business risk warrants.

Validation and detection

  • Verify whether any deployed hubs run firmware version 1012.
  • Confirm whether PubNub-based hub messaging is enabled or in use.
  • Review authentication and account access for affected hub management paths.
  • Check device and cloud logs for unexpected authenticated command activity.
  • Document remediation status and any vendor guidance gaps.
