CVE-2017-16289: Multiple exploitable buffer overflow vulnerabilities exist in the PubNub message handler for the "cc" chann...

Multiple exploitable buffer overflow vulnerabilities exist in the PubNub message handler for the "cc" channel of Insteon Hub running firmware version 1012. Specially crafted commands sent through the PubNub service can cause a stack-based buffer overflow overwriting arbitrary data. An attacker should send an authenticated HTTP request to trigger this vulnerability. In cmd s_utc, at 0x9d0193ac, the value for the `offset` key is copied using `strcpy` to the buffer at `$sp+0x2d0`.This buffer is 100 bytes large, sending anything longer will cause a buffer overflow.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2017-16289 is a high-severity memory corruption issue in Insteon Hub firmware 1012. An authenticated attacker could send crafted commands through PubNub handling and potentially compromise confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The source bundle does not identify active exploitation or a confirmed fix.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority legacy device risk if Insteon Hubs are still in use. Prioritize inventory and vendor-supported remediation because the bundle provides strong impact evidence but no confirmed patch details.

Technical view

The issue is a stack-based buffer overflow in the Insteon Hub PubNub message handler for the "cc" channel. In cmd s_utc, the offset key is copied with strcpy into a 100-byte stack buffer, allowing overwrite when oversized input is processed after authenticated HTTP interaction.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where Insteon Hub devices running firmware 1012 remain deployed. The bundle does not define a wider affected version range, CPEs, or fixed releases, so asset confirmation is required.

Exploitation context

The reported attack path requires authenticated access and crafted commands reaching the PubNub service handler. CVSS indicates network reachability, high attack complexity, low privileges, no user interaction, and high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact. KEV status is false.

Researcher notes

Evidence is specific to firmware 1012 and the cmd s_utc offset handling path. Sources describe arbitrary stack overwrite potential, but do not provide fixed versions, broad version range, or exploitation in the wild.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify all deployed Insteon Hub devices and record firmware versions.
  • Check Insteon or vendor guidance for firmware updates, replacement, or retirement advice.
  • Restrict hub administration and account access to trusted users only.
  • Isolate affected hubs from sensitive networks where feasible.
  • Monitor for crashes, unexpected resets, or unusual authenticated control activity.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether any Insteon Hub is running firmware version 1012.
  • Review vendor documentation for fixed versions or support status.
  • Verify only authorized users can authenticate to hub control paths.
  • Check logs or telemetry for unexplained hub crashes or resets.
  • Document exposure and remediation decisions in the vulnerability register.
